The article is devoted to erectile dysfunction, its main causes and methods of treatment, particularly to oral therapies approved by the U.S. FDA. A comparative analysis of the main specifications of the drugs is given in the article.
There are two types of erectile dysfunction. Rare as it is, primary impotence means that a male has never had an erection sufficient for intercourse. Secondary erectile dysfunction, a loss of erectile ability after a normal function, usually proceeds gradually unless brought on by an injury or sudden condition. People once believed that erectile dysfunction was usually triggered by psychological problems. But we now know that conditions such as strain, depression and fear of poor performance in bed are at the root of only 10% to 20% of ED. In most cases it is triggered by physical factors, such as vascular disorders, neurological disorders, abnormalities in the genitalia. ED can also be a side effect of certain prescriptions and over-the-counter medicines. However, whatever the causes are, males who face sexual disorder are normally concerned and feel guilty and powerless. The U.S. FDA has sanctioned only three drug therapies to treat erectile dysfunction: Cialis, Levitra, and Viagra. The medications relax and widen the walls of the penis allowing more blood to flow to the organ, so that when a male is sexually stimulated, he can attain an erection. The drugs are powerful and work by a similar mechanism to trigger an erection. There are insignificant differences in how long and how promptly the drug works. Levitra works a bit longer than Viagra. They both take effect in approximately thirty minutes. With Levitra, the effects last for about 5 hours. With Viagra, the effects last around four hours. Cialis works a little faster (in about 15 minutes after administration), and the effects last far longer - up to 36 hours in some cases. Although each medication has proven effective, none is cure-all. And they can result in problems when taken with other medications. Note that drug-to-drug interactions with nitrates or nitroglycerin heart medications can bring on a serious drop in blood pressure, which can be fatal. More general side effects, such as splitting headaches and - in case of Viagra - blurred vision can be observed. Apart from oral therapies, there are other methods of treatments, such as mechanical therapies and surgery for severe cases of ED. The kind of therapy, thus, depends upon the severity of ED.
